Aubaine is a restaurant.
Or more nearly, a brasserie or bistro. You can drink coffee and enjoy patisserie at any time of day, but when Aubaine's boulangers and patissiers take a break, the chefs take over.
No-one is certain where the word bistro comes from. Russian soldiers shouted "bistro, bistro" when they invaded Paris in 1815 : possibly a contraction of 'bistrouille' , a fortifying concoction of coffee and eau de vie. Certainly, a bistro is a neighbourhood restaurant that's an extension of the home.
It is a very distinctive service : white crockery, crusty bread, powerful aromas, flowers, clean tastes, bright light, amiable service. There is plenty of style, but the Aubaine experience is as much about attitude.
And this attitude is relaxed generosity. Aubaine is a sophisticated, but relaxed re-invention of a French classic . The Aubaine product : the best bread and cakes you can buy. The Aubaine motto : man certainly cannot live by bread alone, but, on the other hand, wouldn't want to live without it.
Aubaine is French in inspiration, but London in execution. The interior design helps achieve this : full of air, light , fresh flowers and the delicious smell of baking. French country furniture is mixed with urban, industrial finishes. In summer, the glass frontage folds back so Aubaine becomes a part of pavement life.
It is like very old Paris, but it is also very new London....and totally Aubaine.
